Today we visited the Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Institute here in Bangkok to learn about leprosy and fungal infections from Dr. Kampirapap, who is an infectious disease specialist. It was interesting to learn about how their treatment varies slightly from our treatments and the differences in the drugs that are available. In the afternoon we went to rounds in an outpatient clinic to see patients with leprosy who needed follow up appointments and possibly therapy changes. It was interesting to see how even though leprosy is much more prevalent in southeast Asia, their doctors don’t get much training on diagnosing it. Therefor, the disease is often not diagnosed correctly until it has progressed and they have potentially spread it to even more people.
